The Cross Island Line.
A second axis for Hougang.
The Cross Island Line is planned as Singapore's longest fully underground MRT line, running broadly east to west and intersecting most of the existing radial lines. Hougang MRT is planned as one of its interchange stations.
An orbital line
Most of Singapore's earlier lines radiate from the city centre. The CRL runs across the island, connecting town to town without routing through downtown.
Interchange-heavy
The line is designed to intersect the existing network at multiple points, multiplying the number of journeys that avoid a city-centre detour.
Fully underground
Being underground for its length, the line runs beneath established estates rather than requiring surface corridors.
What the CRL changes at NE14.
Today Hougang MRT is a North East Line station: excellent for travel toward Serangoon, the city and HarbourFront, less direct for east-west journeys, which typically require a transfer at Serangoon or in the city.
Once the Cross Island Line opens at Hougang, the station becomes an interchange. That gives residents a second travel direction from the same concourse, and provides redundancy when one line is disrupted.
Interchange status is also what makes a site like Hougang Central viable as an integrated development. Transport authorities and planners concentrate retail, civic and residential density at nodes where two lines and a bus interchange meet, which is why the parcel carries approximately 835 homes above roughly 300,000 sq ft of retail.
Station opening dates, alignment details and phasing are determined and published by the Land Transport Authority, and are subject to change. Buyers should treat LTA announcements as the authoritative source rather than any marketing material, including this page. Last updated 20 September 2026.
