Hougang MRT Cross Island Line and What It Means for Residents

Hougang MRT (NE14) has served the North East Line since 2003. Under the Land Transport Authority's plans it becomes an interchange with the Cross Island Line, Singapore's longest fully underground line, which runs broadly east to west across the island.

What an interchange changes

• A second travel axis — east-west journeys no longer require a detour through the city or a transfer at Serangoon.
• Redundancy — a disruption on one line leaves a second option at the same station.
• Precinct effect — interchange stations concentrate retail, offices and civic uses around them, which is the logic behind the integrated scheme at Hougang Central.

Journey planning

The North East Line already links Hougang directly to Serangoon, Little India, Dhoby Ghaut, Clarke Quay, Chinatown and HarbourFront without a change. The Cross Island Line adds a cross-island axis serving the east and the central north. Specific journey times on the new line will only be confirmed when operating details are published by the authorities.
